Elaborate, heavy and painstakingly created by master craftsmen and traditional goldsmiths (called Thattans in the local Malayalam language), who belonged to the Hindu vishwakarma community, the jewellery designs were exclusive. Although women from all communities used to adorn themselves with varied ornaments, there were some typical designs for each caste or community.
